Meet Our Founder
Rhianna (Rhia) Blackburn is the founder of Casita Spanish Academy. She has taught Spanish to learners of all ages for the past six years, including elementary, middle school, high school, and adults. She is known for her ability to connect with her students and make language learning fun, lively, and adventurous. Rhia created an LLC travel school to lead teens to Bolivia for cultural and language immersion, successfully running two summer programs. She believes in place-based education, art-inspired projects, songs, and creative games to support Spanish language acquisition.
Rhia grew up in the Midwest and began learning Spanish in middle school. When her Salvadoran friend Victoria invited her to meet her family and share pupusas, Rhia had the opportunity to use her Spanish in a real-life setting. From that moment on, she developed a lifelong love for the Spanish language, culture, and food. She majored in Spanish at Drury University, completing an honors thesis on translation theories. In her twenties, she traveled extensively throughout Central and South America. Before becoming a Spanish teacher, Rhia used her language skills while serving as a mission trip leader, front desk receptionist, sales associate, and 911 dispatcher.
